You are going toward your Resolution just fine and then something just happens to set you back. Something triggers a doubt, anger, stress or an excuse. You can brush it aside and stay on track to your goal or it can stop you in your tracks. Once you know what your triggers are you can start getting rid of them. Let’s look at some general triggers.
Stress Money Job/School
Rebellion Tired Past
Doubts Family Anger
Anxiety I want… Your Special one
kids screaming a lot
wife works too much
have to do a lot of cleaning
not enough pay
too much work
can’t make a mistake
Look for triggers that hold you back. Let’s get more specific. A good time to discover them is when they surface and send you messages, desires and excuses. “I want ice cream”. “Skip your study period and watch football”. “Skip your workout today”. The Journal can help you find the triggers.
EXAMPLE Better Grades
WHERE: dorm room
WHEN: after dinner
WHAT WAS GOING ON?: I want to watch basketball instead of studying.
WHAT I DID: watch the game or I studied or used strong self hypnosis…..
EXAMPLE $4,000 commission for this month, a sales person
WHERE: sales floor
WHEN: almost time to go home
WHAT WAS GOING ON?: I am tired. I want to take it easy and let other guys take customers
WHAT I DID: took it easy or brushed thoughts aside and sold more stuff
EXERCISE
Keep a journal for a few days. Look for what sets you off. Look for patterns and discover your triggers. Later on look at and reflect on what happened. If it was a step backwards ask yourself: “What could I do to stay on track to my goal? Next post we will look for more triggers and how to deal with them. Continue listening to the audio tracks and reading your Goalsheet in the morning.
Before or right after biting your nails ask yourself ‘Why did I bite my nails” “What was going on?”. It may be stress, money, family or whatever, but many times you did it because it is a habit and you just did it.
NOTE Once you know what your triggers are you can start getting rid of them.
