Stress can overcome you at any time. It can be a heavy weight upon your shoulders beating you down. Other times stress can motivate you and actually be fun and exciting. It is not how high the stress is but how we handle it. Many people thrive under high stress. A doctor doing brain surgery, a quarterback who must score in the last 60 seconds, and a salesperson trying to meet their quota are examples.

Stress can also thought of as ‘pressure’ ‘under the knife’. You can become anxious, angry, tired, and overwhelmed. You can have doubts about whether you can do the task, get it done on time, or worse how to do it. The question is how do we go from this to a confident, motivated, and energetic person who can get it done.

Where do we start? We can start by monitoring our stress level. Most people don’t realize how high their stress level is until it gets really high and uncomfortable. We need to diffuse it before then when it is easier to do.

The goal is to turn stress into ‘relax’ and ‘energy’. Relax to reduce tension in the mind and body. Energy if something is needed to do at work, school, home and to reach goals and also for you to become motivated, confident and have a plan. Once you do this the burden of stress becomes much lower and you have a better day. This is a different approach to stress.

Note – There are many ways to reduce stress and you can find many of them online and in the section “Stress Release Activities”. I choose the Relax and Energy way because it is totally different and I think it is a very good way.

Here is a good way to start the day. Audio tracks are powerful when used on a daily basis. I have 2 types. For ‘relax’ tracks you need to lie or sit down in a quiet area or wear headphones. It put you in self hypnosis. The ‘outloud’ track keeps you in normal consciousness which means you can listen while cooking, cleaning, sitting down, most anytime anyplace. Both are short. 6-9 minutes long which means you can listen most anytime just be in a safe place.

First let’s set up a stress scale of 1-10 with 1 lowest to 10 extreme. Look back and see stressful times. Put a number on a few incidences. This will give you your higher range. Next let’s start monitoring your stress levels. During your day take a moment to ask yourself:

  • What is my stress level right now? 1-10
  • Ask: How does it feel?
  • If needed use the Action Plan next Post

Do this many times during your day. Look for patterns. This is important.

Look for what triggers your stress levels to go up. Here’s a few.

  • Money
  • Work
  • School
  • Family
  • Health
  • Sports
  • Video games
  • Doctor visit

  • need to fix car
  • kids need to go to dentist
  • $37 in bank

  • kids running around
  • have to make dinner
  • have to wash clothes

Stress can also be thought of as ‘pressure’ to get something done. It can activate us to step up and get it done. During the next posts we will work on lowering your stress and how to thrive under stress.
