TRIGGERS

You are going toward your goal just fine and then something just happens to set you back. Something triggers a doubt, anger, stress or an excuse. You can brush it aside and stay on track to your goal or it can stop you in your tracks. Let’s look at some general triggers.

TOP EXAMPLES

Stress           Money          Job/School

Rebellion      Tired             Past

Doubts          Family          Anger

Anxiety          I want…       Your Special one

FAMILY

kids screaming a lot
wife works too much
have to do a lot of cleaning

JOB

not enough pay
too much work
can’t make a mistake

THE JOURNAL

Look for triggers that hold you back. Let’s get more specific. A good time to discover them is when they surface and send you messages, desires and excuses. “I want ice cream”. “Skip your study period and watch football”. “Skip your workout today”. The Journal can help you find the triggers.

EXAMPLE Better Grades

WHERE: dorm room

WHEN: after dinner

WHAT WAS GOING ON?: I want to watch basketball instead of studying.

WHAT I DID: watch the game or I studied or used strong self hypnosis…..

EXAMPLE $4,000 commission for this month, a sales person

WHERE: sales floor

WHEN: almost time to go home

WHAT WAS GOING ON?: I am tired. I want to take it easy and let other guys take customers

WHAT I DID: took it easy or brushed thoughts aside and sold more stuff

EXERCISE

Keep a journal for a few days. Look for what sets you off. Look for patterns and discover your triggers. Later on look at and reflect on what happened. If it was a step backwards ask yourself: “What could I do to stay on track to my goal? Next post we will look for more triggers and how to deal with them. Continue listening to the audio tracks and reading your Goalsheet in the morning.

BAD HABITS – Biting Nails

Before or right after biting your nails ask yourself ‘Why did I bite my nails” “What was going on?”. It may be stress, money, family or whatever, but many times you did it because it is a habit and you just did it.

DEALING WITH TRIGGERS

Anytime anywhere we can be bombarded with excuses, stress, cravings, doubts, tiredness, to not complete a practical step. Sometimes we win and complete the step and sometimes we don’t. There is hope. We can stop them and the Self Hypnosis Tools will help. You will get motivated, stop the excuses, and complete the step.

Today we look at how we can stop the trigger when they come up. It can take time. It’s taken us years to build these bad habits up and it may take some time to stop them. Over a period of time they will get weaker and weaker until they are just thoughts occasionally popping into our head which we can easily brush aside. In the future they may surface again so watch out for them.

What’s important here is that we have an Action Plan. We can make up our own, use the one below, come up with a way to overcome cravings, excuses, tiredness whatever comes up.

  1. Make a Plan – For example when a basketball game is going to come on during your study time keep the tv off and….
  2. Watch Out – Many times we just don’t realize it when an excuse comes up we just automatically skip the necessary practical step.
  3. First say: STOP! STOP!
  4. Ask 1.What’s going on? I want to watch the basketball game or I am not going to do well on my Math exam.
           2. What can I do?  Listen to audio track. Or Say 1. below. Find what works for you.

Do the above when an excuses, stress, cravings, doubts, whatever to stop you from completing your practical step.  We want to find your triggers and then let go of them and complete you step by following the above outline. Below are a number of ‘What can I do’ actions. Maybe make up a few of your own. Once you find a few actions you can turn it into a habit. Then you can stop asking the above questions if you want and just go right to it.

EXAMPLES – WHAT CAN I DO?

  1. Ask: Do I want to get an “A’ on my Math exam?
  2. By studying I have a better chance of getting an ‘A’
  3. Use a squeeze ball
  4. Listen to an audio track
  5. The SignPost – See future if you don’t get an ‘A’. See future getting an ‘A’.
  6. Go into the study room
  7. Just sit down and open book
  8. Daydream about your goal
  9. Talk to someone
  10. Say PEP talk
  11. Set a specific time and how much
  12. Give yourself a reward when done.
  13. Use Strong Self Hypnosis

Come up with your own ways based on your goal. This will help you greatly.

BAD HABITS – Biting Nails

  1. Make A Plan – For example during your day look at your nails and think about why you want to quit.
  2. Watch Out – For example, watch out for your hand going to your mouth
  3. Try this before or after.
  • Say: STOP! STOP!
  • Really look at your nails right now
  • Imagine how they will look when you quit

Note you can modify, ignore, or make up your own. What’s important is that you have a plan.

Have a good day.
